Can anyone point me to a retail outlet for marine grade plywood in the DC/Annapolis area? Also looking for a place that sells end-grain balsa. (The last is readily available on-line, but it would be nice to find a walk-in store.)

Alternative to M/G plywood.

Doug: As an alternative to Marine Grade Plywood, check out sign board. It is the stuff that sign makers use to paint signs on. Very smooth finish. Much easier to paint if you need to do that. You should be able to find it at any sign makers shop.

Good suggestion

Thanks, Steve. I might check that out. Some of the plywood that's used to enclose our engine compartment is getting a little tired and I'm considering replacing it.

Smooth and very smooth!

Doug: If you have not worked with sign board before, it has a smooth side and a very smooth side (that's the one that they paint. The nice part of it is that it is basically non-porus. So even if you do not paint it, it's still easy to clean. I think that the paint surface may be masonite. So it not easy to attach staples or such. Just keep that in mind.

Signboard

Steve, I am looking for an inexpensive way to replace my hatchboards, how do you think signboard will hold up to that task? How thick is the typical sheet? Thanks. Sean Austin, TX

Not for companionway!

Sean: I personally would not use ANY type of plywood for the companionway boards. Any ply is going to come apart when it whethers and gets wet. My first choice is a combination of teak and plexiglass alternating pieces. This allows light down below when you are aboard and still provides some privacy. All plexiglass is too heavy. I can tell you we have 5 panels on our H'31. The plexiglass piece weighs as much as two teak pieces. The big advantage of the plexiglass is the fact that you do not need to finish the wood. Just use some plexiglass polish on it. You do not want to drop one of these panels on your foot or the sole of your boat.

Poly Boards

Sean, I made a set of boards for the winter layup out of the white poly "cutting board" plastic. Got the material at Boat US but many diys stores cary it. Don't remember the price but cheaper than clear plexi or teak. You can cut with any saw and shape the edge so water will not seep inside. Keeps the good hatch boards nice for the sailing season. Nice project. Good luck. Les s/v Mutual Fun
