Cause and effect ?

We sort of have a way to distract and worry thieves around here that seems to work very well.
Just how does it seem to work very well ? Do you openly carry firearms at the marina ? Do you have live-aboards or an organization standing watch on site or via electronic surveillance to let you know when to confront a thief with your gun ? Has there been a single instance where a gun toting sailor has nabbed a thief in your marina ? Or are you claiming credit for a lack of thiefts without justification ?

Exactly. Why does CA lead the country in people leaving to go elsewhere? just one more reason.
Right, getting to be like a ghost town, Where'd they all go ? Rhodie? California's a horrible place, tell all your friends, don't come here, we're socialists who eat our young. Don't move here, don't vacation here, Ya just don't want to support our hedonistic lifestyles by coming to Hollywood. The whole place is just like you see on TV.:Liar:

In the beginning of crime watch, many residents did not want to be involved due to safety. I lived a community where theft was a problem and the concept of crime watch groups was yet to be heard of. However a few of us decided to move forward with the help of the local police whom were interested in our ideas to include no carry of guns and no contact with the would be thieves. We decided to watch and observe and report any occurences to the police who in turn recognized any complaint from us would have more emphasis as we were working with them.

It took several months and with several caught, the word got around to the theft community to stay away. What about forming a crime watch community in the marina. Of course it will take a short time to watch and observe and after a couple of thieves are caught, the word will get around to stay out of your marina. I know of one that it did work at.

Evidently you don't read very many of my posts. The majority here realize very quickly that most of the time, I just try and post something funny. For the exceptions of late at night when I'm tired and ill, or otherwise again "defending" some wildly crazy something I've put on here for entertainment purposes, generally to kind of "lighten up" something truly depressing.

So the gist of it is, I don't own a gun. Not anymore. Not that it has anything one iota to do with the latest hysteria concerning them, I don't care if everyone on earth carries one like Matt Dillon. I just don't need it. Why? Simply because we don't need the A-Team in Southport. I can't speak for the metropolises of this country, (and I don't care either), but crime is virtually non-existent in Southport. Oh sure we have the usual crime element, kids on skateboards on the sidewalk, a cigarette butt thrown in the streets, the common criminal doing bloodthirsty felonies. You can usually spot them fairly quickly, black socks with sneakers, (sometimes associated with a cane or walker), or even something truly ghastly like a loud muffler.

But my boat is unlocked right now at the marine. With motors, pilots, plotters, you name it. And so are most of them by the way. There's no need. The ones that DO lock a boat is generally someone that has migrated here from some truly despicable area of this country, and haven't figured it out yet. My keys have not been taken out of my truck in over five years. EVER. That would be plumb rude. What if the neighbor needed that truck and the keys were missing? That would be terribly embarrassing for him to have to come to the door and ask for them. But that wouldn't be the case either actually, because we rarely lock the house unless were gone for a week.

So, sorry if I've ruffled yer feathers mate. Here in the south we really try very hard to not be rude.

Most of us...

"Safety" is an illusion. Crime can (and does) happen anywhere to anyone. Leaving your home or boat unsecured is simply asking for trouble.

Down here in Kemah we do have a small concern, but being born and raised in the south,God help them if I catch someone stealing something on mine are a neighbor boat. Yes I carry, and most of the people I know have guns. No, someone being shot for stealing a life ring is not worth it, but as in your home would you want strangers going thru your boat possiblly causing harm to you are your love ones in the process. A friend of mine stays near the marina ,firefighter, and they would not have to worry about the gun he carries but they need to be concern with the club he carries. ,One gentlemans boat was broke into, they stole his radar, not by unpluging it but by cutting all the cables, and the controls were taken, also not by unbolting stuff but was cut all with bolt cutters, all the gauges pulled out of the console.About 18k worth of damage,10k deductable.Do the math. By the way the radar was found at a pawn dealer, they bought it for $50. The thing is we need to keep a eye on each others boats and do not be shy about asking people who are walking up and down the boardwalk "can I help you", and if they give the incorrect answer, call security. By the way, back in summer someone walked up to a tour sailboat about a 40+,cut the lines and tried sailing out the marina.Coast Guard and harbor patrol caught the dude swimming in the water while holding the line to the bow trying to turn the bow and asking for help because the steering was locked.Yes it does happen, everywhere.

Lock and load

Better to keep things locked and hide a spare key or leave it with someone else that can check on your boat. When it comes to guns, that is your choice. I keep my boat at Washington NC right now, but would like other places to slip my S2.
For a newbie to sailing, how is South Port. I live in Raleigh and would like to find a closer place to slip her on the coast.

I've said before that I could live any place on the planet I desire. That was not for one second to sound sarcastic BTW. No kids or family, finances "secure", so I go where the wind blows. That said, I don't like Southport, I LOVE it. It's quiet enough, especially in the off season, and if you want any "night life", Wilmington is thirty minutes up the road. Seriously, I've been to the four corners of this continent, and a few others. While not disparaging anybody else's home, this is the place for me.

You can slip at the Southport Marina for 7 bucks a foot, (that's boat feet, not slip feet), and around $8.75 at Deep Point, Indigo, or South Harbor. Most of the problems that I hear of other places just don't seem to occur here. Now don't get me wrong, out on the island in the winter months, a vacation home gets entered on occasion, clip the t.v. and v.c.r. basically, mostly kids.
There's too much money in Southport to ever let the place turn to rags. At least for the foreseeable future..

Chris, I'd Liked to meet up at Southport to check out the marina. Right now I'm 120 miles from my boat at McCotters in Washington from my home in Raleigh. I have friends in Wilmington. Are you at Southport Marina?

I keep a boat in the Southport Marina. We've been looking to rent/buy a condo right AT one of the marinas there because, well, I think the wife is having trouble disposing of money or something like that.
But I'll be at Indigo Plantation on and off for a while, it's the next marina down the ditch. I've got a fairly long term project on an Island Packet there. 12 year old boat, and I'm "freshening up" the interior. I swear it looks like the day it was made.
But give me a shout. I'm around there most days, unless I'm on the hill which is actually closer to Wilmington. Poor Ericson only needs about a couple more weeks of work, and I can't seem to gather the time for it. When I kick it in the creek, it'll probably go to Deep Point, the next marina UP the river from Southport.

(On the subject of crime, I asked Jesse the dock master at Deep Point, and also lives on a boat at the marina, about has he noticed any crime around there? He gave me that "deer-in-the-headlights" look, and I'm not sure he fully understood me)..

Chris, not to hijack this thread, but what is the sailing like around southport. When I look at the local charts, I see ICW and Atlantic Ocean, not much in the way of overnight anchorage
