My 79 Hunter 30 does not have a winch for the mainsheet on the mast, which is inconvenient. I am going to buy a used winch and mount it. I assume I would drill and tap holes in the most to correspond with the holes in the bottom of the winch and use ss screws to mount it. some of the winches I have seen have as many as 6 holes in the bottom, do I need that many fasteners? I ask as I would rather not drill that many fair sized holes in the mast if I don't need to.

Do you mean a winch for raising the main halyard? If so and this were my boat, I'd buy a couple of deck blocks or an organizer and run the main halyard back to the cockpit, a much more convenient place for it. But no matter where you install a winch, make sure it is secured using all the the holes in its base (and proper backing).

I have a old Maxwell #17 (1985) winch that came as a secondary on my Hunter 31 that would perfect size for you. $50?
