I'm just throwing this out as an idea for discusion realizing that it probably won't come together.

This is the best price on a MacGregor 65 I've ever seen at $97,000 (granted, it needs the engine rebuilt). http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/boa/3405628026.html

Would it be a good idea for 15 people to create a 1/15th ownership offer for the boat? This would be the chance of a lifetime for us common folk to own a world class yacht capable of circumnavigating the world.

Boats don't usually sell for their original asking price so I believe $75,000 might be an offer they'd consider. Is there others out there that might entertain the idea of putting in $5,000 each to make a $75,000 offer for 1/15th ownership of this boat? A "yes" reply doesn't reflect a committnent as this is just a disscussion.

Each owner would get 24 days/year and would have to share 1/15th of mooring costs, 1/15th of costs to rebuild the engine, & 1/15 of upkeep costs. Also, any ideas of the lowest prices/locations for mooring such a large boat.

Only as a racing syndicate.....and every member is of collage age between the age of 20 to 25....and just want to race. No cruisers invited....And for when things break and they will....You will want to have a majority of the group that were born with a trust fund to help take up the slack of those that do not have a silver spoon in there back pocket. Other then that a real hoot!!:theman:

Hey Mac, when I was at MacGregors the other day, I saw the new race boat out of the mold. They hope to have it in the water next spring. It's main purpose is race

Yes, I'm in!

How many days in the year do I get go use if in Nebraska?

I wonder if I could turn it around in my little lake? Lol

Seriously, selling shares for five grand, twenty shares, would get you a Hell of a sweet boat, and the start on repairs.

Ten grand and twenty shares, and this boat is ready to go, with slip fees, maintenance and the lot all figured out. Hire someone to make up a sailing schedule for the year, and the twenty investors would be the crew, deciding up time on her as needed / wanted.

I would do this in a New York minute if this was close to me.

Great idea, great post, and one of the better Craig's List ads I have ever seen.

Because CL ads don't tend to last long, I made snapshots of the ad for this thread.

Some people don't care for the Spartan look of the Macs with a predominantly plastic appearance. I tend to appreciate the clean look of them. Not a lot of wood, not a lot of creature comforts. Pretty much a clean slate to work with. My favorite ones are left alone without any personal touches screwed / glued to the walls. All business is the way to be for such a sailboat.

That is a good idea to sell 20 shares at $5,000 so that you'd start with $25,000 toward rebuilding engine and mooring fees.

Thanks also Sail123 for posting the Craigs List ad pictures.

Even though you may live far from where the boat is moored, think of it as a vacation/cruise where you would expect to need to travel to get to the boat. Ideally some would live closer to look after the boat on a weekly basis.

Two thoughts to keep costs down:
1) It could stay moored all year round in a warm place like Florida's Pan Handle in a protected inlet. I have family near Tampa that tell me most hurricanes are petered out and just gusts by the time they get to them. And keeping the boat on the South East coast would make it a shorter sail to many of the most popular island destinatuons like the Caribean. Also, it wouldn't be far from popular vacation activities. For example, use your weeks to have your family live in the boat while taking them to Disney (like a time share).

2) Memebers could choose to charter out the boat during their week if they were unable to use their it and keep the profit. This way they may be able to earn back their money.

3) We could hold out for a Florida (or South East coast) member that owns a private dock in a protected bay to reduce our mooring costs to $0

what does it draw? (draft)

fwiw we raced against a larger mac, 65' or 70' not sure... -it was slow.... and it surprised me.

I think they may have a race and a cruise version. this must have been the latter.

The draft of the 65' is 6 feet.
The problem with that 6 feet that the group would have to discuss is that there are some thin waters in Florida and the Caribean.

A feasible alternative is a catamaran that would have much less draft.
For example, Roger MacGregor designed this 36' Catamaran that can daysail with up to 18 people and sleep 4. Usually sells for between 29-75k

Sounds like fun...but the admiral didn't like the plastic spartan look described so well by someone above. She would want to be a cruiser, not a racer, and hang stuff on the walls...also prohibited by someone above. :)
Oh well...

Received an email update today from the owner who said:

The boat was listed with a broker until Aug for 118000.00. The engine needs a new head and I haven't located one yet. The price is now $97,000.00. The engine is a Pathfinder which is a VW D24 inline 6 cyl diesel it was used in Volvo cars from the 80's

Interesting...all the comments I've ever seen on the 65 say it's one of the fastest boats of its size out there...but it still comes down to handling, sail quality, etc.

The smile factor catching a ride on this boat would be worth the money to participate in this co op. Sure wish I were coastal.

Here's your opportunity for a 50/50 shared ownership in a MacGregor 36' Catamaran. It could turn out to be a money making opportunity as it is a giant beach catamaran that can sail with up to 18 on the deck/trampolines and is used by several charter companies as a "Party Boat" for daysails. After a good wash and repair, we might be able to do the same and this boat could soon pay for itself.

The price is dirt cheap, about $6,000 so we'd each pay $3,000 and split the costs of mooring fees. Why so cheap? It has been sitting for 7 years and needs a good powerwash as well as the trampolines replaced and the kind of replacing repair that sailboats need when they sit for that long. Thankfully the sails are in ok condition and this is a real bargain at this price.

Pictures of this boat: https://picasaweb.google.com/101783062742028849193/FlPowe81?feat=flashalbum#5812964862757118978
Name of boat: Bi-Bye
Current Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida. (I'm ok paying for mooring where the boat is now, or if you live closer to New England, maybe we can moor it half way between us.
Year: 1981

It can sleep 4, has a porta-potty, sink, small kitchenette with stove. It comes with many things including a Honda 4 stroke outboard (worked as of last year, not started this year), sails, ship to shore radio. speed sensor (unsure if it still works), and lots of extras like life preserves and spare parts.

This boat is reported to be able to get up to 22 knots of speed while sailing! Some report going as fast as 32 knots but I'm dubious of that. Notice from the pictures that this catamaran has the best modification you can do to these Mac 36's, a fiberglass deck! This is an expensive mod and one recommended by many that owns this boat. From the factory, they come with no hard decks, just trampolines like a Hobie cat. Once you have a hard deck like this one already has, you can then mount a Bimini and do some great deck camping on an airbed, etc. Notice also that it's the 2nd generation 36' Cat with the daggerboard in each pontoon for greater stability, and a lighter frame. The first generation only had 1 daggerboard and were heavier.

Interested? We only have 3 days left to grab this deal, so call Tim (603) 943- four six seven eight for more info.

Please take a look at this owner's video (he owns the same model Mac 36): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jzoxKU8FI8

So you can see prices of the same boat, here's what I found on the internet. They are all more expensive than this one above so I think it's a good deal:
1) For sale via video for $28,500:

and via video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJtJ3ksaPhQ

3) This one is priced at $120,000:

4) This one listed at $29,000

5) This one was in very poor condition (pontoons gutted) and listed at 18,000 (no longer available)
http://www.popyachts.com/view/6108

6) Don't know the condition but assuming it's poor since it was priced at $7,500. (No reply to the email address & phone # disconected so I'm assuming it's been sold.)

The 65 would be a dream sailboat for most of us. The cat is just another sailboat in a world of sailboats for sale.

The 65 is pretty rare, and a great price.

You make a great point and it's true that the sleeping arrangement for 4 is cramped (the width of the sleeping area is 38 inches across). I also realize that that low low current bid of $2,650 with 5 days left would lead you to believe that these MacGregor catamaran's are not the deal that the 65 would be.

Please take a look at this owner's video that I just added to my post above so you can see how amazing this Catamaran is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jzoxKU8FI8

Next, please do a search for these MacGregor 36' Catamarans and you will see they normally are priced at upwards of $28,500 when in good condition.
