It is winter and I am passing the time staring at charts of Desolation Sound, the Gulf Islands, and the SanJuan Islands. What is the longest passage anyone has made in a C-22, anywhere?

202 Miles

In Nov/Dec 1997, I made the trip from Crystal River, FL to Apalachacola, FL in my C-22 with a swing keel. Most of the trip was daytime transit and night time anchoring. I was single handing with only 1 overnight passage about 18 miles offshore in the Big Bend of Florida. That day, I didn't get underway until 11 AM due to fog, and tossed the anchor in St George Sound at 5 AM in a horrendous storm. Would I do it again? In a minute! Even though the storm was rough, the overall cruise was quite enjoyable.

Tripping

I sailed singlehanded from annapolis down to Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay. Over 150 miles. Made it in five days includinga rest day.

Totally doable

Just watch the weather & tides, have a lot of gas aboard (fickle summer winds up there) and have fun. LaDonna

Best cruising in the world

After spending a month sailing from Gibsons to the Gulf Islands and back my wife and I are planning next May to expore Desolation Sound and area. The best thing we did was to have a 13 lb danford anchor with 25 feet of chain and 350 feet of line - makes for a sound sleep. The next best thing was the fresh oysters and crabs.

Have you picked a route?

Bob, The trip you are planning is much like the one I have in mind. Is your boat on the coast now or are you leaving a trailer and vehicle somewhere? My boat is in Penticton and I am planning on trailering it either to Sidney or Sunshine Coast to start out. Leaving the vehicle is my main concern. Expecting to be gone 2 weeks and making the circuit at the N end of Georgia Strait.

three weeks on a c22

Tom: we plan to launch at Gibsons again because of the great concrete launch ramp at the Municipal marina and the secure $2 per day truck and trailer storage. They also have a excellent chandelry and friendly staff. If its stormy we will launch up the coast at Pender Harber -Madira park. The ramps great but I'm not sure of where to leave the vehicle - We find this is easiest as you stay on the trans canada hwy to Horseshoe bay and the ferry to the sunshine coast is only $100 return. It's a 10 hour trip from here over two mountain passes. We are going to explore the marine parks up to Chatterbox Falls then across to Comox and down the East Coast of Vancouver Island to the Gulf Islands. We usually spend two nights anchoring and the third in a marina to clean up - re provision and visit the pub. Two nights out is about the limit for the porta potty and fresh water. Three weeks camping on a c22 can be a challenge. We do all the cooking in the cockpit on a propane two burner and small BBQ. We have a large nylon tent cover that fits nicely over the boom and bungies to the stancheons to keep the dew off while at anchor. The pop top is the greatest invention! our hardest item to store is the Crab trap. As a tender is a must we have an inflateable Sevylor 250 - ( abour $300.00 Cnd) we deflate it for sailing and re-inflate when at anchor- we use a rechargeable inflator/deflator from Coleman. We plan to hitch up and head out the 1st of May-until then we will be snow boarding in the Rockies. Hope to make a trip next summer to the Okanagan as your lakes are much larger than ours - we spend most of the time tacking. The best thing we ever did was buy our 1985 c22.

charts and stuff

if you look at maps and charts of the area these waters are quite protected and anchorages are plentiful - you can order cruising guides and books of sailing the San Jauns and Gulf Islands from chapters.ca and amazon.com Besides having things in good condition if you are coming from fresh water you will probably have to apply bottom paint if you are going to be in salt water. click on "related link" below and go to photo gallery - the third photo is one of the gulf islands and gives a good idea the land/seascape
