I have a 1987 H31. the cockpit floor and the ceiling in the aft berth are two layers. I am getting water in between these two layers which then leaks out thru the hole in the aft berth ceiling that exposes the steering mechanism at the bottom of the pedestal. This hole is coverd with a fiberglass pan so th ewater drips in the pan and runs out and down th eplywood bulkhead beside the berth causes water damamge to the plywood. If anyone has any ideas where this water may be coming from other than the pedestal mount please advise. I am in the process of recovering all the interior cushions and would like to stop the leaks.

I'd start with the cockpit drains.

Leif: I would start with the cockpit drains. I'd pull both of them an recaulk them or better yet replace them. Once you remove them you will be able to see if there is any water getting into the plywood. This is also a good time to use a flush mount drain so water does not stand in the cockpit. The next place that I would check is the boot around the steering post. This is a piece of rubber hose with some hose clamps. You may want to see if the clamps are tight or the hose/boot is leaking. Please let us know what you find.

Water Migration

I agree with Steve's suggestions and start there. I presume you don't have any other holes drilled for autohelm, speakers, or other gear. If that doesn't work, then you might check the possibility that water is getting into the area of the stern lazarette (the one you sit on while steering). Another possibility is water coiming in around the exhaust holes in the stern. I had a pinhole leak in that area when I first got the boat and the water slowly migrated over to the back berth until the problem was corrected. Question for Steve: where do you find a flush mounted drain cover to replace that stupid raised one on the cockpit floor?

Got them from West Marine.

Mike: They have them at West Marine. You really need a tool to put the taper into the deck but it can be done.

Leif; Try re-caulking the pedestal steering. Water could be leaking down the bolts that hold the pedestal to the cockpit sole and into the pan overhead in the berth. Mac
