We are planning a trip to Oxford, MD and haven't been through Knapps Narrows in awhile. What is the condition of the channel, we draw 5'5". Is there anything we should lookout for? Thanks

South around the island

We sailed on he Bay for many years out of Herring Bay. If you are concerned up the Narrows just sail south around the Tilgman island. Cutting through the Narrows may save a little time, but we were usaully able to sail and tack up to Oxford.

Sorry....

I was thinking "Kent" when you wrote "Knapps." Getting thru Knapps is pretty straight forward, but watch and follow the markers closely. Remember it's "red right returning" from either the entrance on the east or west side. There also can be a 2-3 knot current around the bridge at times, so plan for that in terms of calling the bridge tender early on Channel 13 before you get too close. If you want to spend a night at anchor before going to Oxford, try going up to Dun Cove off Harris Creek just north of the Narrows. Also, Island Creek, about a mile east of the Choptank River Spider, is a great anchorage, as well.

It was fine in June

We went through there without incident in June. Our draft is 5'7" and had no problems, essentially following the procedure Warren outlines above.
