Javelin Mast Stepping

Dumb question I'm sure, but any tips on the best way to step the mast on a Javelin. Although a little awkward, I've been able to do it myself, but I'm sure I didn't do it as smoothly as possible. Just wondering if anyone has any tips. Also, I know I don't have the terminology right, but the plywood "shelf" in the forward cuddy is a little rotted/cracked. The mast does not touch this shelf. I plan to have it looked at/repaired, but is it OK to sail as is? Does the shelf provide any function other than being able to store stuff on it? Thanks for any help/advice you can provide. This is a great site!

Phil - I would attach the shrouds, then haul the mast up with the forestay. Is that what you're doing? If so, its all there is unless you have a helper. Do you have a trailer winch? If so, you can use it to good effect to help with the lifting. As far as the shelf, as long as the mast step, the point where the mast sits on the keel is ok, and the shrouds are in good shape you should be ok. Its always worth having someone look it over with you, but I bet they say its fine. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
