Jack plate for outboard on a 7.6?

Greetings!

I have an Evinrude 9.9 four stroke outboard on my 79 Columbia 7.6. When the engine is down, it's barely in the water. Moderate waves will expose the water intake causing premature wear on the impeller.

Does anyone have advice on using a jack plate? Or any other ideas?
