: Dear Sirs: Im about to get into the Sailing World Buying the next week an Oday 22 in excellent conditions, I want that boat to perfectionate my sailing techniques and to do some coastal crousing at the weekends, from one point to other point in the island. Is the Oday 22 a good or fair weekener boat for Coastal Cruising? Is not too little? It is just a sailboat for flat waters?..for lakes? It will "respond" at the sea with an average swell hitting the shore. 3 to 9 feet. Do i need to look for something bigger to learn sailing and enjoy coastal cruising at this time...as a beginner...? Or this little beautiful ship will do the job at this stage of my sailing experience? (stage #1) Million thanks for your help! BR.

Its a great boat.

BR - The O'day 22 is a great boat. Its is big enough to spend a weekend or even a week on if you're not afraid of camping out a bit. However, you might want to consider limiting it to smaller waves. While you might well make it, I wouldn't want to sail any 22 in 9 foot waves by choice. I don't know the geography of the Dominican Republic, but if you can stay in sheltered water, or if you can stay near enough to shelter to run away if a real storm threatens, then I would expect the boat will fullfill your needs. If you need to be in the open ocean, then I would use this boat only in shelter to learn to sail then move up the chain a bit. Good luck, let us know how your learning comes along. A good boat to learn on

I agree with Justin. The 22 is a nice boat to learn on; I would also echo his concern about sailing her only in calmer coastal waters. This is not a boat that should be out in heavy weather. I have sailed my O'Day 23 (which is very similar to the 22, except it has a centerboard) in five/six foot seas, and it was not comfortable. The boat is not designed for open ocean. However, if you stay close enough in to make port in case of a real blow, you will be fine.
