Marine plywood with a fake teak veneer. Teak plywood can be purchased but its very expensive, I was quoted $160 for a sheet. I built replacements for all of my plywood pieces from regular 1/2" red oak plywood instead. For the table and step I used 3/4".

those looks GREAT!!!

160 for a sheet isnt going to happen for me..lol Did you find the 1/2 to be big enough or too big?

Thats exactly what i want to do this winter though, get the whole inside replaced while she is wrapped up. ive taken 90% out already for templates

Check locally for MDO plywood.

MDO is masonite laminated on top of plywood to give a very hard and smooth finish for any kind of paint or stain.

MDO is used by the sign industry for outdoor signs, better wood and glue than standard outdoor or marine plywood, all those green directional and location signs along the Interstate Highways use to be MDO plywood.

awesome info, the step board has a crack in the fiberglass from years of wear. going to re inforce that area when i fix it. Why it doesnt have some sort of support behind the lip is beyound me. it seems like a high use, high weight area.

I found the 1/2" to be a tiny bit too thin when I reinstalled the solid teak edge trim on these pieces however I believe 5/8" would have been too thick. Perhaps Catalina used regular thickness 1/2" and then added the additional fake teak veneer which resulted in the original pieces being thicker? It wasn't a big deal though. Rather than staple the trim back on the way it was originally installed and risking splits or protruding staples I used 4200 and just glued it on. This helped to compensate for the fact that they wouldn't have fit snug.

I replaced the starboard bulkhead and locker fronts in "Kellie Marie" with 1/2" mahogany plywood coated with Cetol and it looks just like or better than the original wood. It was $80 for a full sheet at my local lumberyard and the original teak trim fit right on it without a problem. As long as I keep my chainplates and hatch boards tight, I fully expect to get another 27 years out of my work.

One of the first things that I had to do was replace both bulkheads. The originals had rot along the bottoms. I stained some better quality 1/2" ply and coated the pieces with West system. This included the insides of the bolt holes for the shroud straps.

Not sure if this is accessible but here goes:

It's all still there Bilbo, matter of fact, your page quoted above was one of the first ones I looked at when I discovered my SB bulkhead was rotten. It gave me enough info to see that it wouldn't be a bad job to tackle and certainly with in my abilities. BTW, your cushions look great, I'm envious!! This winter I'm slowly re sewing new covers for the worst ones on my boat, you know, the ones with foam showing through....

Thanks. Actually some of the cushions need some work. The table seat by the entrance is kinda ripped from sanding on it and the ones by the bulkheads where they got a bit wet are rotted a bit. I'm thinking about seat cushion covers. Maybe some of that clear vinyl like they used in my grandparent's living room.

Bilbo,

I looked at your blog on the project. That's really nice! We've converted our V-berth area to an enclosed head and luggage storage. But, and full bulkhead on the portside would be nice. It would add to the "pottie-privacy", and give us some additional storage space. I wonder how my Firstmate would react with her claustrophobia? Maybe some wooden louvers in the bulkhead would help, and help with cabin ventilation.

I've attached a photo of our forward section on the boat showing the head and luggage storage from last weekend.

Nice work!

Don

looks good Don,

The louvers are a good idea. im afraid of it being to dark on my non hatched boat in the vberth with a full wall. Well maybe a hatch is in the project now..lol
