West Marine Insurance

I have my insurance through West Marine. They were the best coverage for my 1985 Catalina 22'. You have many options, but I found it easiest to go with the people who know boats best. They make it real easy, just answer a few questions and get a quote on the phone. 1-800-937-8895 is the insurance #. Jon Tart s/v crooked mile

Boat US

I have mine through Boat US & am satisfied. Ironically, my local ins broker couldn't find better or cheaper coverage. The longer I was with him the worse my coverage got and he specializes in boats! LaDonna

Check with your homeowner's insurance company

Sometimes you can get a great boat rate with your homeowners insurance company, especially for smaller boats. If you qualify for insurance under USAA (as a current or former military officer) you can get great rates. I've used USAA for all my boats up to my current Catalina 30.

I agree with LaDonna.............. BoatUS is the least expensive by far. My '77 for $5000 of coverage is only $120.............good luck!

Can't base insurance on premium alone

Just because the yearly premium is cheap, did it ever occur that maybe you're not getting good coverage?? You need to compare all that is covered (and not just 'agreed hull value' vs. 'actual cash value') and what the policy will pay for when claims are submitted. Read the whole policy, fine print and all.... rp.

BOAT/US Insurance

I have my insurance with BOAT/US also. Obviously BOAT/US contracts out the insurance. It does seem that the carrier has changed, but they all seem to be reputable companies. Keep in mind that BOAT/US is a non-profit boating advocacy organization. They were involved in getting the boat tax repealed several years ago. The issue of replacement value came up recently when I renewed. My policy covers what I paid for the boat several years ago, not the depreciated value of the hull. I formerly had insurance with Safeco and really got PO'd with them when my premiums went up 50-75% one year. They gave me some BS about revisiting the claims in my part of the country. Except I have NEVER filed a claim. Dave in Denver 89 C22 "Muddy Waters"
