Having a major problem with the inboard diesel on the boat. Mostly it will run at idle in the slip, put it under a load and about two minutes to three minutes is the max. Also it smokes like a smoke stack. Not so much through the exhaust but back through the cabin. I have gotten on the list for the local machanic. Anyone with experiance with the inboard diesel in a old 25 footer. Also this engine does not have a shut down lever or control. Is this common with this type of engine. Thanks Marvin.

diesel

Having had most of my diesel experience with trucks I have owned, the most common problem with them is usually fuel related, , so drain fuel tank , purge all lines and change filters also check to see if you have a water seperator, when you change filters you must be absolutely sure to get all air from lines, there may be a manual primer pump on the motor for this purpose, I hope this helps MIke you can email me at mmsailor@aol.com

not much help

My suggestion is to move your inquiry to the "ask an owner" site and you'll get more sailors with experience with diesels. The bit about smokes like smokestack *in cabin* doesn't sound real great-you may have a leak/restriction in exhaust system which lets engine idle but when it needs to exhaust more at higher speeds it can't against the restriction?? Having someone in cabin watching with strong flashlight when it starts smoking would help isolate the source as well. Just a thought from an outboard sailor(h26)
