I just bought a '71 Venture 23 and I need a winch handle for it. The winches are not of the normal type. See attachment. Sure would love it if some one could help me find a handle. I also don't do well on computers please e-mail me at gpecaut@hotmail.com Thanks

I don't Use my Winches

I have had a Venture NP 23 for three years. So far I have had no need for a winch. Out of curiosity, why do no you need one? Not trying to be a smart aleck. I really want to know.

Winch handle

Its possible I have one, but my reluctant advice is to get modern ones. You probably have the kind with lovely brass needle bearings inside and the handle that slides into a slot on top. While its tempting to keep these as quality original gear, the conventional ones are way easier to use.

Did they ever HAVE handles?

I have been looking and asking for a year now and have never seen nor found anyone else who has seen a winch handle for the originals. I bought Forespar #6 maralon winchs for $43.00 from Marisaf or Sailnet I don't remember. They are made of some hot shot plastic and should be fine on a small craft like ours. As Dan said there are few times when you really need the power of the winch however; It wouldn't look like a sailboat without them!

Well now you have

met someone with the originals. You guys must be really strong, I sure couldn't pull in my #1 genoa in strong wind without a winch.

RE I don't use my winches

Well, as I said I just got the boat. The one winch seems to be set to pull in the roller furlling the other the jib halyard/yankee halyard and main halyard. I'm sure I may set it up differently. I love the looks of the bronze or dull brass winches and would love to have an original handle to go with them. I know modern winches with 2 speeds and self tailing would be nifty, but I like the traditional look. Heck, may even rerig the running rigging with manilla. I know when I replace the Yankee it will be hank on. With bronze hanks. May even go to canvas sails.

RE did they ever have handles

I remember seeing this style winch on small boats when I sailed Long Island Sound a number of years ago. Usually on wooden boats. I even remember replacement handles at the marinas, 20+ years ago! I don't even know if the boat came with the winches or if they were added. Like I said, I just got the boat, and don't have a handle for the winches. Love the way they look. Won't put plastic hardware on my boat. Heck, I don't even like chrome cleats, replacing them all with bronze.

RE winch handle

WOW, if you would like to sell your old winch handle let me know. Don't care if the bearings are brass, I can fix them. But I like the look of the old winches. If I can't find a handle I'll make one out of steel for this summer and cast and machine out a bronze handle this winter.
