Hard to believe the last post was 6/11 with the lst msg in the que at 5/22. If we don't use this page we will lose it. I race a Hunter 35. Been using a 135 headsail in 15 to 20 mph of wind and no reef. Think I am over powered with the 135. Main sail does not appear to be working as hard as it should. Anybody use a 115 or 120 deck sweep ?? Any comments on the new rules - starting sequence etc ??? Bob Dean

110

We had 15 plus winds here Tuesday night and I used my 13 year old 110. Had my best finish this year 2nd. I was able to keep the boat flat and it makes a big difference on my 28.5. I usally have to have someone work the main the entire race. The 28.5 doesn't sail well dead down wind so the 110 didn't hurt us that night since the runs were not dead down wind. How are doing with the 35. That is one of the boats am looking at to move up to. What year and what type of draft do you have? That boat is a fractional rig correct? Does it have the B&R rigging?

Race Notes

for the last 2 weekends I've used the new ATN spinaker sock that I ordered through HOW/ I love it and my crew does too. I can hardly wait to try it in a race. It sure makes handling the Asym. sail easier. When you foul on a jibe, just bag-it, correct it, and re-deploy. On those note of sailing flat, I used to swear by the 150 genoa on our 29.5. A windy spring made me change to the 110 and I haven't changed back yet. I think the closer sheeting angle helps us point higher-but beware the dog days of August!

Interesting Racing Ideas

Just got my July issue of Sail Magazine. They had two articles in there this month that might be useful for improving your race results. One listed some of the "secrets" that the top racers use to prep their boats for each race. Techniques of using bungee cords or velcro straps to hold sheets, guys, halyards, etc, ways to flake a line so it will run cleanly during a sail change, etc. Another one gave good suggestions on sailing downwind, especially when sailing in a crowd of other boats.

Legend 35 Racing

Bob, I have been campaigning a Legend 35 in our club series, as well as other Northern Chesapeake races for the past five years with amazing results. We love the boat and find that she performs extremely well in most conditions. We carry the 155 Genoa to well over 15 knots wind speed, which means that on the Northern Chesapeake you almost never have to change down. The 135 was used three times in three years and 110 has never been out it's bag in nearly five years. I find that the secret lies in enhancing your detuning (flattening) systems. I fitted a sixteen to one backstay tensioner, eight to one cunningham and four to one outhaul. With this combination I can increase, or decrease power in split seconds and it is paying off very well. We are winning most races we sail in and we are beating everyone across the line, including J30, J34, First 345S, Laser 28 and a C&C 110Express. The L35 rig is prone to excessive headstay sag, which affects your pointing ability. I am pleased with the way in which we have now reduced this tendency and we can now point as high as any of the boats in our fleet in any condition. Please feel free to e-mail me directly if you want photos of the systems. Good luck! Bill

Bill - Send Pictures...

Bill: You didn't give your e-mail address; so, I'll give you mine: CaptainRonB@earthlink.net. I would like to see pictures of your upgrades. Sounds like you are really getting the most out of your H35. We race an '89 H33.5 and are fininshing ahead of most of the boats in our fleet. (There is one S2-7.9 that eats our lunch.) What else are you doing to prepare your boat? Are you doing anything to reduce weight? (Do you weekend aboard, or is the boat striped pretty clean?) How is your success in light air? I have installed solid vang and led lines aft. Our outhaul is 2:1 and led to a winch. Cunningham, 2:1, is also led aft to a winch. Our Backstay is just 2:1, but we doin't seem to have any problem bending the mast. Having more purchase will allow you to make finer adjustments, faster... Good ideas. Do you sail with Spinnaker or non spin and use a pole? What kind of PHRF do you carry there in the bay? (Locally we give the 35's a 137.) Thanks, RB, "Counterpoint" H33.5
