Hunter 460 Fuel Capacity

I have run our new 460 to empty on the fuel gauge two times. Each time required 51-52 gallons of diesel to refill. The brochure claims a 100 gallon tank. Hunter confirms a 93 gallon tank. I am concerned about needing more than 50 gallons of fuel for our upcoming trip to New England for the Hunter rally. My fuel gauge probably does not read the entire tank. However, what have other 460 owners experienced about avaialble fuel capacity. I am planning on taking three jeerry cans of additional fuel on the trip.

Its the Guages?

I have a 450, same fuel capacity. The guages (WEMA) are natorious, they are grossly inaccuate. I have logged my fuel comsumption now for four years and I have an excellant idea when I need fuel, usually wait until the 80 to 85 gallon level. I have gone as far as installing a second guage in the cockpit, which is where you really need it I believe. I too is a Wema and I know for sure that the second float I installed is VERY near the bottom of the tank. I guess to sum my suggestion, keep an accurate fuel comsumption log gallons/hour with your hour meter being your guide.

Gallons per hour computation

What's be best way to compute how much fuel is used? Or, is there a rule-of-thumb to use based upon engine hours and average RPM? I have a new 410 with a 51 (I think) gallon tank.

Calibrated Stick

Fuel is too important ultimately to completely trust to ANY guage; in an extreme it could easily be a safety issue. The only certain measure, even if only used occasionally as a double-check, is a calibrated stick that slips down the filling tube all the way to the bottom of the tank. Then never run below maybe 25% to avoid pick-up tube problems. Same thing for water (different stick, of course!). Now the holding tank......well....we will pass on the calibrated stick on that one; we'll believe WEMA until that fails, and then it's Snake River time. Carl and Jule s/v 'Syzygy'

When Does 100G Not = 100G

When measuring with a Wema gauge. We have a 450 and ran the gauge all the way into the Red Zone, not intentionally. When we filled the tank it took just over 62G. The 450 is supposed to have a 100G tank. I like the idea of checking it with a stick and then tracking your own useage. Over time you'll know what you have in the tank without the "help" of the WEMA gauges.

how to estimate

It might take you a while depending on how you use the boat but ... several times we have filled the tank on our P42, used the boat for 40-50 hours of engine time, refilled and averaged the gallons per hour. It works out to about 1.1 over all kinds of usage. I fill based on the hour meter.

Gauges are s$%$#

Ahoy Robert: The gauges in nearly ALL tanks are sucks! We own a 460 (2000) and all gauges (regardless of freshwater, holding or fuel) indicate anything but the truth! In the 460 you can make a "visual" check. Your fuel tank is in the port side transom storage box. Its a plastic tank with 95 gallon in it. Mark 75%, 50%, ... and you have a "backup" My experience about consumption: 2.500 rpm = 1.1 g/h = 6.8 kt 2.600 rpm = 1.2 = 7.3 2.800 rpm = 1.34 = 7.5 3.000 rpm = 1.5 = 8.3 Yanmar 76HP, 3 blade prop Cheers

Has anyone replace the guages with acugage on a

Hunter 460? How did it go? Warren Millennium Magic

Gauge replacement

Warren: They have been units purchased by 460 owners but I can't tell you how hard it is to do. Hopefully someone who has done it will respond. Wish I could help. Dennis Snake River Electronics

VERIFICATION OF ACTUAL TANK CAPACITY

I have a 2000 model h-460. I began to wonder about the fuel capacity on a trip to Florida. The book, Hunter Marine and my dealer all have confirmed that it holds 100 gallons. However, I dam near ran out of fuel in the Gulf thinking I had 100 gallons of fuel. We just figured the fuel cosumption was higer than we figured. But when refueling, I have never added more than 50-60 gallons when topping off.I am having the fuel capacity verifyed this Monday the 23rd, by pumping the tank dry, then refilling her. This way I will know exactly what the capacity is. I will post the results next week some time.

FUEL CAPACITY H-460 IS 80 GALLONS NOT 100

I have a 2000 model h-460, which I had a question as to the actual fuel capacity. So I had the tank pumped dry then re-fueled her.I was able to pump 80 gallons back in max, trying every trick in the book to get more in,however, that was it----80 gallons. Hum! I wonder how much actual water capacity I really have.
