I'm trying to find a PHRF rating for a shoal draft H-34. In addition, I have added 211-lbs to the keel, after hearing of good result from other Hunter owners, and would also like to know if there might be any ratings posted anywhere based on similar modifed H-34's.

You'll need to contact PHRF Lake Michigan

Since you have added weight to the boat any PHRF # for the boat will not apply. You will be getting a different number and will need to contact Lake Michigan PHRF with all the info on what has been done to the keel. They will be giving you a time faster then a stock boat. You will need to supply drawings or pictures of what has been done. You will need the certificate to do any raceing. I have a old PHRF book that shows the H 34 shoal keel to have a number of 135 for Lake Michigan the book is from 94. But since the keel mod it will not apply and you will have a lower number meaning a faster boat. Cliff H 28.5 "Red Dog"

Why .....

...did you add 200+ lbs to your keel?? The idea in racing is to make the boat as 'light' as possible not increase the weight. When I changed my keel for a better design, I kept the weight of the keel the same as stock, but lowered the CG by inceasing the draft and using hollow areas in the top of the keel. The result, a boat that points better and is stiffer with the same overall displacement. The keel mod cost me 6 seconds on my PHRF cert but it was well worth it.

h-34 shoal draft -weight added

My shoal draft H-34 boat sailed very well in all directions except close hauled in heavy air. In order to make any headway, sail area needed to be reduced greatly. Drift was also a major problem, like plus 10 degrees, so it was hard to make good headway. Since sailed with the 211-lb wing addition in 15 knots of air, closed hauled, I was able to make 7.8 knots and with only 2 or 3 degrees of drift, all verified by GPS against compass and knot meter. The wing was placed at the center of lateral resistance to eliminate any steering influence. The draft is now 4"9" vs., 4'3". This change has exceeded my expectations. The H34 is a great sailing boat and this made it even better. For more info or photo email: kingmatool@aol.com

Sounds Like you got a good design

The wing keel that comes on most production boats isn't worth the lead its made from, but if you got a good design thats a whole different story! If your static draft has incresed 6", then the sailing draft has increased even more. That accounts for the lowered leeway. As for the increased boat speed, that is dependent on the design and location of the wing. The wing adds wetted surface area and therefore drag, but can also add lift and minimize the end plate vortex which can lead to speed gain. Your net result seems to have been a gain.
