I recently purchased a 1985 Hunter 31. I've been sailing for years with outboards, but have no experience with the inboard 2GM diesel. I am looking for tips on routine maintenance, things you absolutely dont want to overlook on a routine basis based on your experience. For example what's the best way to change the oil on the 31 and where's the darn drain plug? Is there a website that is real good with common sense maintenance info for this engine? Thanks Scottbe@ipeg.com

The oil in your engine is changed by pumping it out of the dipstick tube. Other things that you mush change are the fuel filters. A good insurance is also change the freshwater impellar if your engine is fresh water cooled. Belts are another area that can cause trouble. Good luck gd

Understand you situation. I recently moved up to 31 from 22 w/outboard. Belts and impeller are good idea. The tell me to change the oil at the end of the season, before winterizing. (Chesepeake here.) Chilton recently put out a manual for yanmar that's pretty good. Chilton prints tons of auto repair manuals, this yanmar diesel is a new one. I think it's on Amazon. I recommend it.

Check Out this...

Check out and print the Yanmar Tips from Curt Morris on the home page of this site. Also, 1. There are at least 3 Yanmar web sites, that I know of, that people can use for research/contact regarding Yanmars: yanmar.com mackboring.com torresen.com 2.Some diesel distributors offer one-day seminars on diesel basics. This is worth the investment just to do the regular maintenance and they give you enough info to get yourself out of trouble if something minor arises (bleeding system, change impeller, troubleshooting). 3.The CD oil type is getting more difficult to find in some locations. I spoke with MackBoring salespeople and they informed me that any type GREATER THAN CD (e.g. CE, CF, etc) can be used in place of CD. 4.In the cooling system - an owner should note the normal water flow discharged by the engine. If there is restricted water flow coming out of the exhaust, or white steam, this is an indication of a restriction. In the last two years, I have twice found debris (eelgrass) plugging the 90 degree elbow that goes INTO the strainer. This wasn't immediately identified until I disconnected the hose from the strainer. Sometimes, the thru-hull is clogged and I must poke a wire (backwards) into the valve to free it up. Or reverse flush it with a high pressure water nozzle (now standard equiptment in my cockpit locker). There is no external hull strainer on my boat. It would be a good idea to purchase the service manual from Yanmar (about $40) for your engine. It is very helpful for detailed info re: how often certain maintenance should be done.

Yanmar Oil

My manual for my 3GM calls for Shell Rotella engine oil. It is available at truck stops

Went through the same outboard-to-diesel thing last year. I bought a Yanmar manual ($40) and this - in combination with talking to other Yanmar owners at my marina - has been of great value. Invest in a good oil pumpout (the Big Boy is rated best at $50) and avoid the elctric drill oil pumps (they don't work).
