What is the best location to install a holding tank for a P30 1974? Has anyone installed a tank behind the head in the locker area? Should we do away with the overboard discharge or install a Y valve? Suggestions? Thanks Sandy

V-Berth is the vest location

It's within 6' of the toilet and will allow you to run the vent line forward at an angle that'll keep the tank aerobic, which is the key to odor elimination. Ronco Plastics http://www.ronco-plastics.com is your best source for a tank. They make TOP quality rotomolded PE tanks for a very reasonable price and have more than 400 shapes and sizes to choose from, including 100+ that are non-rectangular. And they install fittings in the sizes and locations specified by the customer when they make the tank. You should find the link below useful in specing out and installing your system. As for whether to keep the y-valve...If you spend most of your time at sea beyond the "3 mile limit" where you can legally flush directly overboard, I'd keep it. If you spend most of your time at the dock or in the bay or other close-in coastal waters, you might as well take it out.

Currently there is a hose that has a a loop in it, I believe that it is the hose for waste. It appears like the vent loop is missing. Is that because it was a overboard discharge? Do you know of a diagram that is available to give people a visual idea of what to do. Thank you, Sandy

You need to know what that hose is connected to

A hose that has a loop in it could also be a bilge pump hose or the toilet intake hose. So you need to find out what's at each end of it. The installation instructions for your toilet should include drawings that illustrate an example of how to plumb it to a tank and overboard thru-hull. Unless your toilet is so old that it's obsolete--in which case it's time to replace the toilet--you should be able to find the instructions on the mfr's website.
