Having trouble with gear selector (jumps into forward)

This has happened several times now. After docking and I put the gear selector in neutral (engine idling), after a minute or so the boat will jump into forward gear (usually when I am off the boat getting the stern lines). It seams that it is difficult to determine neutral from forward with the gear selector.

Any idea what I can investigate / inspect? I would like to have more of a positive confirmation when the boat is in/out of gear.

check the integrity of the gear shift cable - it's either loose or too tight
