What type of GPS are you guys using. I'm thinking of one of the Garmin handheld types. This way I can use a suction cup mount. About 50% of my sailing will be lake, the other half will be in the NJ bays and Upper Chessy bay. I had a 2010C on my power boat and loved it.

Garmin and Magellen seem to be the most popular. I use the Garmin 76MapS. Go to this link for more. http://kobernus.com/hunter260_web/upgrades/gps/gps1.html

Go to the Garmin site and you can compare features from the entire product line. Also once you learn one Garmin product...all the others work the same way.

Look at memory size of unit

I have a Garmin GPS 76 and it works fine for lakes or driving. Very clear display & zoom features. The only drawback is memory size. I have their lakes/fishing software and their roads/cities software. You highlight blocks of areas to download onto the unit. This particular unit has a small internal memory & can't be expanded. Problem is you have to keep downloading different sets of data depending on where you want to use the unit. The information is very detailed & accurate- just can't all be downloaded onto this unit.

Don't forget lowrance

Don't forget to take a look at Lowrance hand held GPS. Lowrance products cater to marine applications (they also make fish finders and other marine navigation tools). I bought a Global 100 five years ago and it has been my best friend on land and at sea since. It has reasonably detailed maps already installed and I have been amazed at how even the smallest bodies of water or tributaries are present on the maps.

GPS thanks

Thanks for the imput. I've been looking at the Garmin 76C. Nice unit with 115mg of memory. Its going to be a adjustment, I'm used to looking at 10 inch screen, not 2. I have heard Garmin is coming out with new handheld unit with Blue Map installed in 06

Garmin 76

Bob is right, with the 76 series you have to decide how much memory you want to pay for and if the sensors are worth the extra $$. The new color handhelds have a HUMONGOUS memory and battery life compared to the 76. Here's where you get what you pay for. Another factor not mentioned is customer support. The Garmin website is very good and I've found customer support to be very responsive to e-mail questions.

Try this GPS review site...

It seems to be a fairly comprehensive independent GPS review site. I have a 76 and really like it, but am eyeing that new 376C. With the 76, I download the tracks and overlay them on a map (using Delorme software) for our guests. The tracks show the days' sail route over the water.
