Jim's halyards
Jim–This might sound like 'DUHHH!' but you figure halyard length by doubling the hoist (measure the sail when flat) and then adding the distance to the winches and adding about 5-6 ft or whatever you're comfortable with. Hence the 61 ft. However I would not use 3/8" on any displacement boat's halyard– too tiny to pull by hand and annoying to get knots out of. One of the responses mentioned 1/2". Go with that.Use a low-stretch nylon 'yacht braid' or 'double braid' which ties tidily and feels good in the hand. I'm not a walking advertisement but New England Ropes are the best– soft, strong, and good looking. That nice old 25's worth it!J Cherubini IIJcomet@aol.com
