I race every Sunday at the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club in central Ohio. This is my first year, and I started with a handicap of .93. After a few races, I got a 1st and a couple of 2nds. Now I'm told that my numbers were old, and the current one is 1.011. Now the best I can do is 4 or 5 against the other cruisers. New England PHRF lists Hunter 25.5 and 26.5, but not a 26 or 260. Two questions:
1) where can I find the correct numbers?
2) why would a phrf change from year to year when the boat doesn't?
This system is confusing to me.
Thanks

Sounds like you are racing under the Portsmouth rules and not PHRF. There aren't any handicaps like you mentioned under PHRF. Your handicap under Portsmouth is somewhere between 89.0 to 91.2 depending on wind strength. You can find this on the U.S. Sailing website under Portsmouth Handicap. Does your club set its own handicaps? It's been known to happen.

Sorry I thought you had a 260. The correct # for a 26 with no spinnaker is 90 to 94.1 depending on wind strength. Also the correct name is Portsmouth Yardstick. You can also check the U.S. Sailing website for PHRF handicaps.

PHRF rating for H 26 varies from 207 to 234 with an average rating of 219. Both the 25.5 and 26.5 are faster boats with lower ratings.
As for your rating change, welcome to the politics of racing. Those numbers you quoted do sound like Portsmouth ratings. They are definitely not phrf.
