When reefing I have to find a 7/16” socket and wrench to remove the gooseneck bolt. Does anyone have a quicker system, like using a cotter pin or something?

On my H26, I have something that looks like this...

And on a Mac 22 I used to own I had something that looked like this....

It is attached near the tack on the goosneck and you simply lower the sail until you get to the reef tack grommet, slip it over the hook and then raise the sail using the halyard. Easy peasy

Thanks for the reply. The stock Mac 25’s mainsail doesn’t have reefpoints. Instead you roll the main around the boom to reef. In order to do that you have to remove the bolt holding the boom to the mast at the gooseneck. I’d like an alternative to the bolt.

Oh right.... sorry. I misunderstood your question. My Mac 22 had the rolling mast also. But my main had reef points. I would use the roller boom to reef in port and could easily let it out if the wind slacked but found it flogged the crap out of me to try to roll the mast while in a blow. So I would slab reef once I was out on the water. I would leave the pin out when sailing because the rolling boom gave the foot of the sail a nicer shape.

The only thing different for me is that I had a thumb screw so I didn't need a socket. You can buy them in the "odd parts" bin at Lowe's.

I would buy them in a bag of four... because I would drop a few overboard every season.

Thanks! Good idea. It seems like I would still need a nut to keep this in place so I’d still need a wrench.

I don’t know the 25?
But on the 22 the thumb screw pressed up against the mast and was held in place with tension.

I have the thumb screw shown above. Been working for me for years. I keep saying some day I add reef points.

Great. I feel a little silly. I have the same thumb screw. I clearly just didn’t understand what it was for. Thanks guys.

J Brock. Spend the $$ and go to a sailmaker and get double reef points put in the main. I ordered mine when I got the boat. Good investment that will save a lot of problems. :banghead:The roller reefing was one of Rogers goofs. By the time you need to reef you'll be in trouble. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Some wisdom in @Freedom77 's post. As I mentioned in another post, the roller reef boom works great to let out a reef but is a PITA to reef in a blow. I did like the roller for storing the main and I usually left my cove with the sail partially roll-furled since letting it out is so easy if the wind was light once I got away from land. But once out, I slab reefed if I needed to shorten sail.

The problem with mid boom sheeting on my M25 is that it is always in the way.
I don't know about the V25 but on the M25 the pop top opens to the rear and if you put the traveler across the companionway it keeps you from jibing on a run with the top up because the sheet tackle is against the bulkhead or if tacking with the top up and the hatch open it tends to get stuck in the hatch opening

On the H26, the sheet block attaches in the sole of the cockpit and not on the bridge deck. That takes care of the problem you described but I do wish I had a traveler.

Time Bandit has a typical set up. I never sail with pop top up. Sudden gusts on Lake Mead sometimes can potentially result in a knock down. I find mid boom is better because it's easier to sheet in from there, get better sail shape and sail closer to the wind. Had it for 40 years. No complaints.

Sounds like Lake Mead. Summer can get up to 110 and flat:yikes:
