Thanks for the reply, I have one question, WHAT CABLE ??? All we have is a Line(rope) about 3/8 in diameter that is run thru a small clete. It has a stop knot on the end and about 18 to 24 inches are out of the hole. this is located on the 'threshold' of the companionway. If there is a cable of any kind it is no longer there. the rod we put down the hole is approx. 1/2" in diameter, i am not sure anything much bigger would fit, because of the rope. strength did not seem to be an issue as I said it felt like we were moving beyond, or penetrating something, could we be in soft wood?? does any one have any comments about rudder replacement and/or improvement? We also seem to have an issue with losing steerage in strong winds the boat just will not turn. needless to say this has caused a couple of exciting moments, is this because of the stuck up centerboard? has anyone one added extra balast to their 23? would this help in any way to create a more stable ride? thanks for the help!!!

CABLE

My 1980 Oday23 has the same keel/centerboard setup as yours- there is no cable, just the line that runs down to the cboard. You will probably need to bite the bullet and get the boat up on straps, etc.- to do it right. I have not had problems steering, as long as my c'board is down, and my sails are trimmed properly.

My answer to your question. hope it helps.

There is a cable that is attached to the rear of the centerboard which runs up and is attached to the line you are referring. I have had to replace the line at least 4 times in 10 years. As far as the rudder issue. When this boat takes on a gale, the rudder is overpowered as you have seen. One way I have been able to compensate for this is to let up on the rudder a little until it regains steerage. The otherway is to quickly pop the main and you'll get her back. :)
