fuel tank leak

After noticing diesel fuel in my bilge recently, I checked all fuel lines, filters, etc. and found all dry.Upon closer inspection of the fuel tank, I found all connectors dry but fuel under the tank. The tank was obviously leaking. It appeared that tank removal would be simple, but I should have known better. The locker opening is 14.5 inches and the tank is 15 inches in diameter! So, looks like I am faced with several options: remove the engine to get the tank out, cut the locker opening to allow removal of the tank, or somehow cut up the tank for removal. I would appreciate and welcome any suggestions, comments, experiences you may offer concerning my problem. If I can remove the old tank, I have found a replacement tank from West Marine that will fit thru the locker opening.

Ned, i have a 1975 Pearson and have access through the Port quarter berth. Dont know if this came from the factory like this bout if so previous owner did a good job finishing out plywood panels using stainless screws and fender washers. Godd luck and let me know how things come out. Frank

fuel tank leak response

Many thanks for your reply, Frank. Taking the tank out of the quarter berth opening is not possible on my boat. I asked a boatyard mechanic to take a look at my problem and he seems to think the tank will fit thru the starboard locker opening after sawing off a lip. I have disconnected all fittings and the tie-down straps on the tank and will attempt removal tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes. I see you are in Moss Point. I spent nearly a year many years ago, 1960-61, at Keesler AFB as an enlisted airman learning electronics. I enjoyed my time there and always planned to return but never managed it. Hope you are enjoying your Pearson 30 as much as I am. Had a 1978 Pearson 35 for years. It was a great Chesapeake Bay boat, but with cruising days behind me, the 30 is perfect for the Rappahannock River day trips and racing. Ned
