I need to move my boat from Hilton Head Island, SC to St. Simons Island, GA..a 115 mile trip down the ICW...and I haven't made that long a trip on my 22 ODay which has an 8hp Nissan(2 stroke)kicker...if only motoring, how many miles per gallon can I expect? Trying to plan amount of gas to carry. There are several small marinas on the way...but would hate to run out of GO JUICE.! THanks for input, jbcsailor1@aol.com 1977 Oday 22

Fuel Consumption

John, I sail an O'Day 26 with a Nissan 9.9, running it at about 1/2 throttle, it will push me around 5 MPH. At this rate, I burn around a gallon an hour, or to make a short answer long, 5 MPG. Ben Allen Montgomery, AL "Wahoo" O 26

Gas Sense

Hi John, It sounds like your in for a great trip. I'd love to try the ICW one day in my boat, but some alterations are in order. Having run "dry" in a channel before, I always make sure that I have a spare 5 gallons of pre-mixed gas aboard in addition to the tank in the cockpit. It helps to extend my range and also is a nice way of shifting weight. I also keep a supply of two-cycle oil aboard with a measuring cup so I can mix my own fuel from a dockside, or inland gasoline source. Having these things will give you options when considering your trip. I would reckon (even with extra fuel aboard) on at least one stop for gas in all tanks. It's far better to have more than less when conditions grow foul. Having enough drinkable water is another thing altogether! Good Luck!
