The Balmar ARS 3 voltage regulator has died on my Catalina 30. I'm looking at replacing it but not excited about spending over $300 on a new one. I've looked at automotive external regulators that cost $30. I don't have a lot of dc drain on the boat and really just need the alternator to recharge the starter battery bank when on over-night trips. Anybody have any advise? I realize the automotive regulator won't last as long as a marine grade but the price difference seems significant.
Thanks
Edwin

Most of the old "Ford Style" regs use the same plug as the Balmar and will plug in. Alternatively you can buy a Balmar ERS regulator for about $50.00...
