An individual in my area keeps trying to sell a very nice 27 with a gas engine. The price has dropped to less than half the going price of a diesel model. I have priced a conversion to a new engine and it is prohibitive. Where would I find a good used diesel engine, what is the costs to rebuild one and what is the cost of the conversion?

Check distributors

My brother is currently converting an A-4 to a 3GM30. He found out about it from Mack Boring when he was inquiring abou a new one. It only has 800 hours on it.

Atomic 4

Keep the Atomic 4, it is a great engine. If you take the proper safety measures, like with anything, the engine is fine. I had one for twelve years and it worked like a swiss watch. the engine is very strong an will give many years of service if properly maintained. You would be hard pressed to get the investment of a diesel engine out of the boat when you sell it. By the boat and be happy with the discount that you get for the gas engine.

Buy now

Hi Mac My suggestion, buy the 27 now. Be scrupulous with your maintenance. Meanwhile, be looking for a deal on diesel, that you can buy on oppurtunity, rather than need. Check your local marine stores, for handout mags, and bulletin boards. Deals are out there. Good luck red

Gas is OK

We read a number of buying guide books before entering the market, and eventually buying our h27 (with the original Yanmar diesel.) All of the books viewed gas as a good alternative. We gave a small edge to diesel for simplicity, but would certainly have bought one with a gas engine, too.
