Great to watch @jack.

Looks like there is a reef and gimbal mounted camera.

Makes want to get out there now after watching the video.

Once or twice! ;-)

But funny it's a bit of a mix. Some of our week-night crew with some of our big boat (first 36.7) crew on this Sunday. It's actually the FIRST time that we sailed together as a crew like this!

Thx chief!

True and true.

We typically reef in around 20 kts TWS. Like this day.

The GoPro is mounted in a self-leveling HorizonTrue camera mount. It's a real work of art. The guy who runs the company sails at our club and I beta test the mounts with our cameras. They are real works of engineering. Look like this :

That's the downside of FAST downwind legs. Over way too soon!

Nice jibe & takedown. Driver doing a pretty good job keeping the boat under the rig, too.
I think Lake P gets a little lumpier in 20 kts.

Thx. If I could do it over again, I would have had them keep the kite up for another 10 seconds. Once it was down, you could see how much the boat slowed. But we had a HUGE lead and this was the first time that combination of crew managed the spin, so I figured better safe than sorry. I hate nothing more than having to sail past the leeward mark!

Depends on were you are on the lake. Its deep and shallow which can effect waves, and in some places closer to shore the wind is up but there is not enough fetch to build up waves. Down at the lee side near the start, it was a bit bumpy; 3 foot waves pushing us around while we loitered under main waiting for our start.

Awesome video. That speed and jibe were amazing...reminded me of windsurfing days! What was your boat speed before the mark?

On a tech question, on both sides of the jibe before the mark, the main sheet looked somewhat slack, or at least not under much tension. I assume the spreaders aren't swept? Otherwise how do you keep the main out of the spreaders? Is a spinnaker so effective it has reduced the relative wind across the main to almost nothing... meaning you are moving at nearly the speed of the air mass?

I always zoom in on your videos to check out how your rigging is configured to see what I can learn. Thanks! Dan

Dan,

We were 8.6 knots sustained in the puffs. That's about a knot off our max with a bit more breeze.

The spreaders on the First 260 are very swept. The 'slack' look on the sheet is from the very wide angle GoPro, it has the visual effect on the mainsheet! But you are right on one point... the apparent wind speed is down due to the speed of the boat!

Whoot! Whoot! Jeff owes me a beer! ;^)

PS - You'll love it. The real TRICK to these types of mounts is not the gimbal, anyong can make that for a few bucks. The deal is to STOP the pendulum effect of the swing after the actual boat motion stops. If you do not dampen the motion, the thing swings until its natural motion stops. The video looks like crap. The HT mounts use a hydraulic dampening mechanism to make it look, well, fluid.

Yea, noted that. Great idea. Look forward to putting it to use. Thanks for the referral on it.
