Difference between Hunter 380/386 and Hunter 38

Hello, i search to buy an Hunter 38 in my country. But... 380 or 386 seem not too bad. I prefer the exterior for dinner etc...
But, it's accessory...

I prefer to have your advice for exemple on the speed etc...

I saw on Wikipedia, Hunter 38 was design before the 380, but build after... Strange...

Some question if i must to compare:

-Same Lengh? I never saw the same information! Usually, the 386 seem on the doucment it seems shorter than the 38.

-For sailing, somme difference, easier, as fast? The position for the winch are not a real problem on the 386?

-Furling mast on 386 are the same quality on the 38?

Etc...

I read all owner review for 38 and 386, but nobody compares the two boat.

There is very little difference in terms of sailing characteristics, volume or LWL. The differences are mostly cosmetic. I have friends who own them and the biggest difference is cockpit layout.

Thank you! It's a bit like what I thought. The thing that bothers me about the 38 is his cockpit table. But of course we can do like a guy from the forum, change it. The thing against me that leads me on the 386 is the location of the 4 winches, far from the bar ... But, if between the 38 with furling, and the 386 with furling the sailing is identical in terms of performance, it suits me!

Yes, like i say in my first messahe, i read allthe review of the owner of 380/386 and 38... But hey speak about thier boat without compare between the both i'm interrested. That's why i post this thread. Thanks!

During my travel on the web, i saw the max of sail for Hunter 38 is 93 square meter. Fot yhe 386 75.5 square meter. It's a big diffrence!! In light air... It's perhpas an error of the website where i read that?

That may be true or maybe one (the larger) was a traditional sail while the smaller is on a furler.

For the size of the sail, i read the owners book ah the 386 and for the 38.

For the 386 they give only ne size: 75 square meter. But... They don't say if it's with furling main sail or not...

For the 38, they give with the mainsail furling 77 square meter.

It's similar, only if it's with furling mast for the both...

But if 74 square meter it's for classic main sail, for the 38 it's 95 square meter...

So, perhaps for furling mast on the 386 it's under 75 square meter...

You have an idea? I can't find the truth!

I had a 386 for 10 years. Excellent boat. For light winds just get an Asymmetrical and actually out run others of comparable size. Others in the area (380s, 38s, 39s) all seem to sail about the same. He who trims the best is always a little faster.

I owned a 2004 Hunter 386 for 9 years and it was a fantastic sailboat. Well designed, points high and sails reasonable fast without weather helm.

Good luck.....one thing to note is to learn how to unfurl and furl the main correctly to avoid getting the sail stuck in the mast. There have been many threads on this subject.

If you check in here, on the Marlow-Hunter site, they have a lot of the documents on both models. Under Model Information is the original brochures for both with all the specs. There is also the more detailed manuals in the Owners manuals.

The 38 was redesgined in 2005 with a different hull shape, plumber bow and stern, the cockpit is narrower on the 38 with the 386 being rounder and redesigned interior.
