I am wondering what the costs are in the USA to employ a delivery skipper. How do they charge and all the other need to know stuff like is the payment up front, air fares for skipper and crew, insurance cover for yacht and crew, disclaimers etc etc etc... Any help and guidance with any information or perhaps a web link very much appreciated.

My only experience...

was $150 per day. You fed him and took care of getting him to and/or from the boat. If you own the boat, your own insurance "should" be adequate. I'd make sure my liability limits were fairly high.

Rates on the West Coast tend to be a bit higher. I hired the manager of a sailing club who had a captain's license and goods refs. It worked out well in terms of the boat being delivered quickly and in good condition. Ask at your area clubs or among racers The deal included me paying for air fare for the crew of three to the pickup point, a night in a motel (required to get to the right place), fuel and all provisions. I also took them all out to dinner the night before they took off. Crew does not normally get paid, as they are people like me who do it for experience. I can't recall the fee, but it seems it was something like $200 per day. I think the references were really important, as some delivery captains have a reputation for non-stop high-speed which can damage a boat. Personally, I'd rather pay an extra day and have less to repair. Sanders

Hiring a captain.

I am a 100 ton licensed master and do deliveries of recreational vessels, Gulf of Mexico, East Coast and the Carribbean. Most of my colleagues in this area get $200 per day plus expenses. South Florida and East Coast captains were getting $250/day. Usually a credit card or cash is provided up front for fuel and food. The daily rate is invoiced at the end of the trip, since there are weather factors to deal with. My mate(s) get $100 per day. Oh yes, if the owner comes along - the rates double (LOL).
