Would someone kindly help me plan the legs of a fall trip from Deal Island MD to New Bern via the Dismal swamp. Family is going along so no 16 hour slogs. My dividers are getting less pointy! I'm also trying for 7 days or less. I might end up docking the boat somewhere for a week and start again. Any help is appreciated.

While there are an almost infinite number of ways to make this trip, one of the more direct routs, based on your expressed parameters might be....
(mileages are approx)

Deal to Tangier (or Reedville) ... 24nm
Tangier to Jackson Creek (Deltaville) .. 24nm
Jackson Creek to Hampton (or Norfolk... Waterside) .. 40 (or 50)nm
Waterside to NC Welcome Center (inside Dismal Swamp Canal) .. 30 (or 20)
NC Welcome Center to Eliz City (or Belhaven if good weather) .. 22 (58)nm
Eliz City (?) to Belhaven ... 36nm
Belhaven to New Bern .. 55nm

I've been thinking about a similar trip from the Richmond area to Oriental NC.

I've stayed over in Elizabeth City. It takes about 30 to 45 min. just to traverse the river from the sound. Then you have to sail back to the sound the next day to continue your trip. You might want to take a look at Alligator River Marina (I've stayed there before, nice cheese burgers) or one of the Marinas on Roanoke Island. You would have less back tracking.

If you are taking your time and sight seeing, Roanoke Island has a lot of fun stuff to see and do. They have an aquarium, and replicas of Victorian era ships to tour, nice restaurants etc.

I also think Belhaven is out of your way. I'd sail over to the outerbanks and stay someplace over there for a night or two. Take a look at Stumpy Point Bay. It is just south of Roanoke Island. It has a public launch and a few stores you could visit for provisions. It makes a good staging point for destinations south. For example from Alligator River Marina to Stumpy is 37 nm. Then from Stumpy to Hatteras is 25 nm or you could go to Ocracoke from Stumpy ( again - 37 nm).

Ocracoke is awesome BTW.

From Ocracoke to Broad Creek is 29 nm or you could push onto Oriental (again - 37 nm).

Then from Oriental to New Bern is 23 nm.

Are you familiar with Active Captain? If not, check it out (www.activecaptain.com). Great way to work through different trip scenarios.

Post pictures when you are done..

Dreamboat's 2011-2012 ICW Cruise Log

We took Dreamboat south last October and back this spring in no particular hurry and a goal of seeing the sights. For details of the portion of our trip that went through the areas you ask about, check out the menu on the side of posts by date. Southbound it was 10/11/11 to 11/2/11 and Nlorthbound was 4/30/12 to 5/7/12.

In looking back I see that we made no mention of the part going up the Neuse from Oriental to New Bern or back. It is a very nice section, with plenty of depth and easy well marked channels as you get near New Bern.

Thanks for the help. I've tried Active captain but can figure out how to plot the lines. Do I need another program, besides the free download? Mulf, I'll check out your trip log. I really want to make sure the family is with me through the swamp. I'm hoping for a good weather window. If not this will be a spring trip!

Thanks for the help. I've tried Active captain but can figure out how to plot the lines. Do I need another program,
If you hold your cursor over the starting point of a trip and right click, you will get a menu tree. One of the options says something like, "plot distance". Click that and it will set a way point. Then go to the next way point and right click again. One of the options is "set way point" and you will start to get a running total of the distance over water. When you are done plotting your trip, you can select to save it to routes.
