I have finally begun the work of dealing with the leak from the mast conduit. I found that the compression post was rotten for about 4" at both ends. Also the wood inside the fiberglass bulkhead is rotten too. Can anyone tell me how much wood is in this bulkhead? Does it go all the way to the sides of the boat as the bulkhead does? Can I cut a hole thru the bulkhead where the post used to sit and install an aluminum post full length rather than cut out the bulkhead and remove the rotten wood and install an aluminum block? I am afraid of weakening this bulkhead by taking a chunk out and trying to reglass it afterwards. Any information anyone has about this would be appreciated. I have already downloaded all the info from the step by step instructions and pictures that one owner placed on this site but I want to consider options. Eric Linklater "Worlds Away"

Be sure to check your support to the keelson!!! I have an '81 H36 that I just purchased and am completely redoing this very neglected boat. I discovered a design flaw that is serious if not corrected and may be applicable to other boats of this vintage. My iron upright that supports the compression post to the keelson was COMPLETELY rusted away. This was caused by the fact that the area it is located in had no drainage into the bilge. Basically a watertight compartment. I replaced the support with an aluminum support and cut drainage holes into the bilge. What a disaster this could have been. I plan to explore this issue very soon. The problem was mentioned to me when I purchased my 81 36' a couple of years ago. Can you email me some basic steps you had to go through. Maybe some meaurments of the replacement post...

Me too!

I have a 79 H30 and have also noticed the steel I-beam corrosion. Is there a minimum thickness which would indicate replacement/repair? The boatyard looked at it and said I was not compromising saftey by removing the flakes and applying rust-o-leum. However, I would like it new again. Is the aluminium as stroung as steel? What is the effort involved? How do you make sure the mast base is at the same height when finished as before? Do you have any pic's of the project? Thanks, Mike
