Companion way sliding cover

I would like to remove the fiberglass panel that covers the companion way sliding plexiglass cover. I'm sure there are all kinds of wonderful things growing under there!
There are 4 Phillips screws holding the panel in place. I can get a turn or two loosening them but then they become very difficult to turn and I risk stripping the head of the screws.
Has anyone had experience removing this cover? Perhaps it is just grunge that is making removal of the screws difficult but I hesitate to push it until I know it is OK.

Bob, I have a Bavaria 37 and have removed the cover to clean out the growth. The screws may be have a sealant but they will loosen. But you have to remove the traverse rail so you can lift off the fiberglass cover. The bolts for the rod are under the rollers at the ends.
