This would not be used on the gasket surfaces of course. Riser is aluminum. I was looking at a nylon or brass brush. Also, I assume carb cleaner for the exhaust and a vinegar soak for any lime scale build up?

Since you are in fresh water, your approach will do some good.. in salt water, a chisel is about the only thing that will get the deposits off..
Good Luck!

Is a brass drill brush alright since the passages aren't gasket mating surfaces?
No problem. For what engine is this ?

If this is correct, you MAY be able to remove the deposits. For salt water, a mixture of sulphuric acid, nitroglycerine, and nuclear waste is required.

Riser is aluminum.
Highly unlikely in an exhaust system. Sure it's not SS ?

Perfect! I've had a bucket kicking around with that exact concoction I that I was about to dump in the river!

It's cast and totally possible that it's steel. I haven't pulled it apart yet. This boat isn't fancy enough for SS
