I am going to change the raw water impeller tomorrow while I am changing all the cooling hoses on my m-25xp. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated (first time doing this).

Thanks
Matt

Make sure the face of the cover plate is flat and clean. What pump? Sherwood or Oberdorfer?

I'm guessing you still have the Sherwood pump.

Disconnect the influent hose and then undo the three bolts. They are in kinda backwards and you can only get an open ended wrench on them. And you can't get a full turn, it will take a long time.

Good luck with all the hoses. The ones to the water heater can be a little difficult.

I changed the impeller yesterday. The Sherwood pump is looking pretty beat up and I really dislike the bolts on the inside. Ready to change it to the Oberdorfer. Have been Reading all the past post. I think it's worth doing. The elbow hose behind or under the pump needs changed also. Wondering what the pipe that it connects to does.

The pipe is just a short section, about 5 inches, that is there so you don't have to make a weird turn with hose only to pass the oil filter. You can order the short elbow and the longer hose with the 90 degree turn from westerbeak, don't try to use regular hose for these sections. I ordered the replacement hose kit from westerbeak and it had all of these hose sections on it. Cost about $135 if I recall correctly and was cheaper than buying all of the parts separately.

The metal tube is held on with one bolt. I took it off, cleaned it up with a wire brush an 3m pad than repainted the exposed section. Don't paint the parts that are covered by the hose.

Changing to the Ober pump isn't that hard. I wrote it up on a past thread. It does take some work, it's not a bolt on replacement. But I am very glad I did it. Just make sure you get the -16 model not the -15. The fittings will be the same size as what's on the Sherwood.

Good luck.

You did a really nice job with writing up what needs to be done to change pumps. Between you and the info Stu posted in the past I'm sure I can do the job and get the pump installed and working. Thanks to both of you for the hose information also. I will do a search on Toyota also.

There are more then a few of us on these list that I am sure go the extra step to maintain our boats in the best condition we can. What amazes me are the number of people who do nothing to their boats and seem to get by.

yep I still have the sherwood pump. I got the main hoses replaced yesterday but ran out of time to do the impeller.

quick question - is there a gasket that needs replaced on the sherwood pump? Also, do I need special tool/pliers to remove a retaining clip on the impeller?

ps, while changing the hoses on the port side of the engine, I must I leaned on the small hose from the expansion tank and broke the plastic neck it attaches to..... so I guess I will be replacing the expansion tank as well.

No gasket, no retaining ring.

My expansion tank had a leak when we bought the boat. I can't remember how much it cost for the new one.

You might be able to fix the tank with a small through hull fitting?Just a thought!

Related question: Are there any recommendations as to how often one should inspect and perhaps change the raw water impeller? The manual does not address this.

I follow MaineSail's advice on this. I change the impeller annually. When I do, I keep the used one as a backup. I also only use OEM impellers.

thanks but I just ordered a new one. It was less than $15, thankfully.
I also replaced the expansion tank. The old one was weeping anti-freeze from the area where the saddle brackets secure the tank to the bulkhead. Now the new tank is doing the same thing. I'm thinking of converting to an automotive tank. Anybody else have this problem?

You really don't have to buy an automotive one. Just get a small Rubbermaid container, the hole in the top is perfect for overflow hose.

Any chance on reposting the link back to where you did it for those of us who missed it the first time around?

I have also seen the suggestion of using nuts and a slightly smaller screw when putting the current pump back on so that you can remove the screws from the front? Anyone been successful with that easy switch?

I think this thread was bad luck for me today. Launched the boat no water pumping. Thru haul open, strainer clean, new impeller. Any ideas?
