Hello! I am thinking about getting a 1982-1988 Catalina 36 or 34. I have not been aboard one (hope to soon) but the aft cabin on the 34 seems to be larger and more usable than the one on the 36??? How is the cabin on the 36 - is it really livable and practical for sleeping two people or really just cramped??? Any opinions would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

standing solid door vs. lower folding door

I first saw an 88 C-34 and really liked the layout. The aft cabin has a "full size" door which provides privacy. The 1986 C-36 that I ended up buying has a folding door (or rigid curtain) that you have to duck to enter. There is room to sit upright on the stbd settee in the aft stateroom, but not enough to stand (unless you're REALLY short! :) The 36 does have a better nav station area because of this, so it depends on your priorities. The 36MkII was changed in 1990 to include the solid standing door like the 34. Both appear to be good layouts to me... Trevor

36 v 34 rear stateroom

I too have a 1986 C-36 and choose it because of the way the rear stateroom layout is. With the filler board in-between the sattee and the berth, it is easily sleep-able for 2, but I doubt I would ever use it that way. We like and use the rear sattee and can sit on it while getting storage out of the rear berth. One time we did sleep 7 people and had to use the filler board (head on the sattee and it was great. With out the full size door, the 36 has a lot more room for the forward Nav station.. Good luck Bob

I just bought a '86 C-36

I just purchased a C-36. I chartered a '90 C-34 this summer and I think the aft cabin is a little better in the C-34, the overall layout of the c-36 is better. In the 34, my wife and I used the aft cabin, but in the 36, I think we will leave that one for the kids. One thing though, the C-36 aft cabin will fit more people with the filler installed. The 34 can fit two comfortably, three in a squeeze. The 36 (with the filler) is roomy enough to fit three with no problem. Les Murray C-36 Ceilidh

Filler board

What filler board are you guys talking about. Does Catalina have one or did you guys just add it youselves. That filler board would gratly expand the aft cabin.

Stock from Catalina

The filler board, as it is called, should come with the boat. I suppose it could be fabricated if someone "left it in the garage" or something before selling the boat. Trevor
