I've been sailing my Catalina Capri 37 for about a year and I'm having fun getting line honors in the South Bay regattas but when I'm up against boats of similar PHRF handicaps (72 SD PHRF, 68 SoCal PHRF) the results are dissappointing. I'm noticing that the leeward lower stays have slack on Starboard Tack and no slack on Port Tack. The boat seems to make good speed on Port but is lackluster feeling on Starboard. Also I'm not sure how much rake and prebend should be in the rig prior to adjusting tension in the shrouds. What advice do you have?

Rigging

Hall Spars has an excellent article on rigging that will help you determine where to start.

Hello, Contact us or any other Selden dealer for their free tuning guide. You might also want to get my tuning video. Hall's manual has some good points, but is a bit scant on quantifiable details for my taste (i.e., "The upper shrouds should be tightened as tight as you can get them with a 10” crescent wrench."), and just plain wrong on others (i.e., "The forward lower does most of the work supporting the mast laterally. The aft lower acts primarily to limit mast bend as the backstay is tightened in heavy air."). Get the principles clear first, then integrate them into your boat. Fair leads, Brion Toss
