I have an '87 Cal 33 and I am having difficulty with the rig tuning. In 15 knots apparent wind, it has a fairly heavy weather helm. It is also pointing 5 degrees +/- below comparable boats such as C& C 35 mkiv, CS36, J-30's. The boat has a new #1 and an old main which I do not believe it is a problem for the pointing, not 5 degrees anyways.

Cal 33

I have a 88 Cal 33 and I have notice that I do not seem to point as high as other boats when sailing in our local fun races. The appaerent wind shows that we are sailing 35 degrees off the wind, but iseems we are losing ground to windward. I have notice that by tightening the backstay adjuster I am able to point some what higher. We are still learning about the boat, I dont see many articles about Cal 33's

Pointing

Cal offered this boat with 6'2" draft and a shoal draft model. I have owned a 1985 deap draft model since new. When I friendly race the only boats that can outpoint me are higher performance models like J80's and C&C 37+ (40' OAL). I do very well against Catalina 34's and other comparable boats, both up and down wind. I have never had a problem with weather helm. At 15 Knots apparent, with full main and 155% genoa she's ready to shorten sail. Dropping the traveler and increasing backstay tension will always balance the helm as the wind builds. Overall the CAL 33 has a very good balance of performance and comfort. While having a very large interior, for a 33' boat she is a good looking, fum boat to sail.
