Does anyone have a picture of a catalina 270 boom vang? I'm trying to rig one but not sure exactly how the lines run.

AFIK the 270 came rigged with a soft vang... nothing unusual about it.. unless you want to run control line back to cockpit...which means the cleat would be on the rear cabin top, separate from the vang itself, after the line is routed aft through a deck mounted block or an organizer. If the halyards are run aft then you might be able to use a spare slot on the organizer. The mast boom connections should be obvious... if the bale on the boom is missing... look for some opposing holes in front of the mainsheet gear. At the mast there should be a pad eye or similar fixed in the sail track as low as possible... just above the mainsheet turning block at the base. There are plenty of pics online at www.catalina27.org or a simple google search for Catalina 270/

There are few pictures on the C270 Group web site (membership required). You would not have a spare cleat for the vang, unless you don't use one for the main sheet (or the outhaul, or the reefing line).

Scott. Here ya go. One pic is of the top and the second pic is of the bottom which is attached at the base of the mast. I snapped the pics last fall before I put her up for the winter.

Also you should join the Yahoo 270 group. Some interesting stuff goes on over there.

I confess, I didn't put my vang on last year and I didn't miss it one bit. With the traveler so far forward on the boom, I never needed it unless I was trying to swing the boom out 80 - 90 degrees which I never do. I prefer the simplicity of just using the sheet and the cart to control the boom.

Thanks all. This C270 has a hard vang so must be either an upgrade or been installed sometime after purchase. I kind of figured it out but am a bit baffled by the attachment to the mast base. Seems the vang should have gone on before the mast was stepped. Might have to do as suggested and remove it for this summer.

I had added a Garhauer solid vang to my 270 a few years back. They are right, you will be short one spot on the organizer. I ended up freeing a spot port side by dead ending one tail of the mainsheet. Never used the mainsheet on the winch anyway. Worked well.
Kinda tricky fastening the solid vang without help to place the boom. Ill try to find a pick.

may have a different attachment to the base of the mast, but normally, I would expect something going into the sail track. IO have Boomkicker instead and there a little plate goes into the sail track (you can slide it in from above the boom) and you attache the bottom bracket to it. You should not need to remove that bottom bracket ever for the winter decommissioning.

Added a Garhauer gas vang two years ago, and it's fantastic, even in no air, it'll let the main have a little bit of shape that it wouldn't have otherwise. Downside is that it's attached to the boom and the line better be tied off before taking it off the mast.
So far, so good.
Looks almost identical to John's 30 picture.

Good eyes! I thought I had (in fact I know I have) newer pictures, but as usual the organizational department here is out to lunch. August 7 2013 according to the meta data.
Since the boat is finally in the water, the mast is tuned and all that's left is to put the boom on, I'll get a better shot on the weekend, before we haul it out for winter. :)
