I have a 1996 40.5 Hunter legend, which I have just hauled out to get a bottom job done.
I am looking at quotes for redoing the strip above the waterline and it would appear that it is quite a job to repaint, rubbing down, labor, expensive agrip paint etc...and the boatyard suggested a Vinyl cover instead of the paint, cheaper, but have no idea what it would look like or how long it might last?

Has anyone put a Vinyl strip on the water line and just above?
Does it look ok or just tacky (no pun intended)

Any advice is really welcome

I repainted the waterline strip on my old 30T and don't remember it being any big deal. Don't know anything about vinyl but think paint would last longer and is a better option. Recommend you contact Interlux and ask their opinion about what paint would work.

The problem with vinyl is that having a pre-cut tape/stripe.There is a good chance that the boot stripe of paint varies in width as it goes along the length of the boat.So the tape may cover the boot stripe in some areas and not others. There will be very small slivers of the old color showing on the edges. If it was the first time for any stripe. Then it would not be a problem.I do not know the size of your stripe. But pre-cut tape of a large stripe is doable. But it will require lots of prep work of old paint so the new tape will stick. Then you have to find someone that can pre-cut the tape and install and trim.If you use 3M tape you will get about 7 good years out of it.
Personally if your hull looks nice and shiny.I would use paint. You will be happier with the results.
It really is not that difficult to sand and re-spray that boot stripe. It does not require a big production.

Painting stripes is not hard. Make sure you prep the surface as described by the paint manufacturer. I did all mine with Intrlux Brightsides. Use the proper type and amount of thinner and brush strokes disappear. A quart should be more than enough to do the job. Make sure you use quality tape so you can leave it on for multiple coats.
