I recently aquired a 1988 O'Day 272 and was wondering if I could go up the mast with a bosun's chair without upsetting the stability and/or durability of the boat? I appreciate any reply. Thanks Dieter.

If the rig is sound

If the rig is sound, you should be able to go up on a calm day without incident. Be careful, have someone who knows what he's doing with you, and if there is any doubt have someone check the rig for you first. Justin - O'day Owner's Web

Aloft on a 272

Hello Dieter- I agree within Justin. Make sure the rig is sound and the person lofting you is sure about what they're doing. I've gone up on my 272 a few times using the main halyard. Since there's no real mechanical advantage and a relatively small winch, you have to "help" the person who's hoisting by doing a little climbing/shinnying as they grind. Be sure your sheet stopper's working well.

Don, how do you rig the chair?

Don, I've been up a few times using the chair, but never felt comfortable because I have yet to come up with an efficient fairlead from the halyard to one of the #19 self-tailing winches. I've used the #15 on the cabintop with a line clutch, but I guess that's what makes me nervous. I weigh 180-185 lbs. Is using the #15 s.o.p. for hoisting someone up the mast? If so, I can relax and enjoy the ride to the top. Tom
