Big Thanks to Maine Sail

Hey MS,

Just wanted to give some credit where it is due, probably over due.

My wife and I were on our summer cruise last week. This year we went south to the Vineyard, Cuttyhunk and hit a few other stops along the way. While on a mooring in Edgartown, I started the engine and after running for about a minute it revved up and then stalled. I tried starting it again and the same thing happened. After a short time of trouble shooting I figured out that the problem was air getting into my fuel lines. A little longer and I had found and eliminated two potential sources, a loose factory fuel filter and a loose hose clamp. They must have been loosened during our snotty trip down Buzzards Bay to Woods Hole on our way to Edgartown. We let the engine run for about 30 minutes to make sure we had no more issues and after that we were back on our way.

Before I bought this boat in 2010 I had zero knowledge of diesel engines. My only experience with diesels had been driving a roach-coach as a part-time job for a few months for some extra money while in college. I am not a gear head. But I knew that if we were to ever go out cruising I would have to up my skill set when it comes to doing my own maintenance and repairs, especially on the engine. Luckily, your previous boat was the same model we were considering so when I was doing my research on Catalina 310s I found your posts on Sailboat Owners, the Cruisers Forum and your own Compass Marine website. Since then I have become a total devotee.

Through numerous posts and articles you have helped me build my skill set. We are talking rebedding hardware, winterizing our boat, polishing and waxing hulls, learning how to maintain diesel engines and battery systems, completely redoing my battery system, all the way to my biggest project when I repaired my transmission, replaced my drive shaft, installed a new cutlass bearing and a dripless adapter. I never would have been able to take on these tasks without the knowledge you shared.

You spend time sharing all of this knowledge with us for free. If you hadn't I probably would have ended up spending a few hundred dollars on a mechanic to come over and fix the problem. But since I didn't have to, I thought I should put some of that money towards the source of my saving. I donated through your website and the only reason I bring it up is that you rarely solicit for donations but I am sure others have benefitted from your sharing of knowledge and would donate if they knew about it. So thanks for all that you do.

Fair winds,

Jesse

I still like to challenge him with some unique type of question or happening on our boat, haven't stumped him yet.

Wish I knew you where sailing this way. We could have met for another beer or maybe a lobster salad at the Chart Room in Cataumet! How was your trip through Buzzards Bay? Last couple of Sundays have been interesting.

BTW I agree Maine has been a tremendous asset to the sailing/boating community. Donated in the past and will do so again I'm sure.

I always enjoy the romp up Buzzards Bay with a SW wind and opposing tide. If the waves aren't wild enough, there's always a boat under sail cutting across the travel lane ahead of you heeled over enough so they can't see you coming. Throw in a few fishing boats anchored in the canal and you have a pleasant day in Buzzards Bay. I wonder if USCG or HS would object to my mounting a cannon on the bow? I could do that right after the wind generator.

Hey Bob. I definitely should have contacted you and got together for a beer. Work has been so crazy and then Hurricane Arthur showing up in the middle of our cruise it was difficult to keep my head on straight. Next time I am in the area drinks are on me.

Yeah. BB was rough during our trip from down. Love that 2-4 foot BB chop. Nothing like 6 foot walls of water coming at you every 3 seconds.

Then we got the exact opposite coming back. Left Cuttyhunk with less than 5 kts of wind and glass flat. Had to motor the whole way.

How is your season going?

Not too good . Splashed late this season and have had way too many family obligations. Add to that I've been going crazy with work. We just finished an ISO/AS9100 audit. This all adds up to an occasional day sail. Very disappointing season so far and the admiral isn't liking the crazy winds/sea state when we do get out. How long was your summer cruise in days. I would like to go through the canal and head to Boston via Scituate/Hingham sometime or I might try a long weekend to Ptown. Haven't been through the canal yet.

This site has provided a tremendous amount of knowledge; and, sometimes amusement!
Whenever I start a boat project, I always research the owners manual, my personal library and always consult the "brain trust" on the Boat Owners website. The information that I have acquired from the various postings have saved me countless dollars as well as hours of frustration. I certainly appreciate Maine's efforts in running and moderating the site as well as everyone's contributions. I certainly agree with Jesse's assessment that the site is worthy of a small donation to keep it going.
Again, thanks for your efforts.
