Hi Guys

The batteries in my recently purchased 2002 year Bavaria 36 seem a little tired and I am thinking of replacing them. They are Bosch, 55ah starting and 140ah house.

Anyone got any adviice on what to replace them with?

Regards

To a degree, it depends on what kind of demand you will be putting on them. Lead Acid is the cheapest way to go. Check with a local distributer, they usually offer many types and don't necessarily charge "Marine Grade" prices.

Lead Acid Golf Cart Batteries

I upgraded my batteries on my Bavaria 36 to 4 golf cart batteries. They fit into the same space as the 2 140 ah batteries that came with the boat, but they give me a greatly increased capacity. I now have 480 ah instead of 280. I chose Trojan, but there are other brands that are good quality.
Good luck,
Tom

Re: Lead Acid Golf Cart Batteries

I will likely need to replace my batteries next year in our 2003 Bav36. Will go the route of golf cart batteries. Firehoser75(or anyone else who has gone this route) - how did you fasten in the batteries? Did you build a battery box??

Installation of Golf Carts

I purchased 2 battery boxes with lids (the white plastic kind) that each can contain 2 golf cart batteries. I put those boxes into the same space as the 2 140 ah batteries occupied. I glued a strip of 2x2 onto the hull using 5200 on the outboard side of the battery boxes (as tight fitting as possible). Then I used nylon tie down straps to hold the boxes and lids in place. I screwed the nylon straps to the 2x2 strip for the outboard end, and used industrial strength velcro to attach the inboard end to the inside of the "seat box". You could screw this end as well if you don't mind the screw heads showing from the cabin side. We have been heeled over in gusts to over 35 degrees and no movement at all.
Hope this helps,
Tom

Other options

In the space of the standard house battery, you can install a similar, large, 140+ AHr, heavy replacement battery (I think that would be a size 4D) - OR - you an install 3 size 24 (or maybe even 27) Marine, lead-acid deep-discharge batteries. Those will be lighter, easier to manipulate, of larger aggregate capacity, similarly priced, and offer improved performance.

Check the suppliers (WM, Dekka, etc) for details - ymmv

When my house unit goes - that's what's going in.
