I think you mean 40 knots written "40 kn" or "40 kt".

The knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile (1.852 km) per hour, approximately 1.151 mph. The ISO Standard symbol for the knot is kn. The same symbol is preferred by the IEEE; kt is also common. The knot is a non-SI unit that is "accepted for use with the SI".

Well just so it doesn't get blowout of proportion it was not blowing 40 knots. it was a Martin 242. I have friends at King Harbor Yacht Club I'll no more shortly. Certainly some bad luck there but full story coming.

They had no steering g capability without any sails up. Looks like jib was "stuck"? Not sure why they did not put up the main (reefed)?
