Atomic 4, '73 Ericson '32: taken out of engine compartment to remove rust, prime and paint, and replace wiring, hoses, etc. Noticed several beads of water along port side of engine after 1st prime coat, must be a cracked block. What are my alternatives? Thanks for any info.

Jack, there is a lot of aftermarket support for

Atomic4s but if you are going to sink a large amount into the engine I'd rather put it toward a diesel replacement. I believe it is Westerbeke that makes a diesel replacement that uses the same mounts and alignment as the Atomic4.

Before you buy a diesel which comes with its own

unique problems, I suggest you post your question with some digital pics at the Moyer Marine website. They specialize in the Atomic 4 gas inboard engine and have been most helpful to me. My current Atomic 4 engine is from 1967 and runs like a top if cared for. Painting the engine block is a good idea to keep track of wear and tear. Are you sure there was not condensation on the engine prior to spray painting (I assume)? That could potentially be the answer except a few pictures would be helpful. I would first suspect the gasket between the head and block as the culprit but without an idea of where your water appeared I can't say for sure. What I will say is that some people use JB Weld epoxy to repair broken parts of engines etc. It can withstand the heat apparently. MMI forums website: http://www.moyermarine.com/forums/index.php Good luck with your A4.
