Anchors Aweigh

There have probably been a million posts on this issue but I now find myself perplexed. When I bought my Hunter 356 in 2002 it came equipped with a 22lb Delta anchor. Having sailed for 20+ years I took that little piece of metal off the bow and replaced it with a large Danforth, with 130 feet of chain. Never had a problem sailing throughout New England for twenty plus years with Danforth. Moved to Florida and the dammed Danforth won't hold. The 22lb Delta just looks like a little toy anchor. Since I have now been convinced by my Foridian sailing friends to replace the Danforth while in Florida waters with the Delta that came with the boat, I am left with a perplexing question. Is the 22lb anchor large enough or should I go with the 35? I know what the charts say, but does anyone have some practical experience they would like to pass on.... John

too small

22 lb is too small for your boat. You will sleep better with a 35.

356 Anchor

Our 2003 356 came with the 22# Delta and we could never get it to hold. Replaced it with the 35# Delta which works just fine. The 356 is a big boat for a 36 footer. Based on our first hand experience go with the 35# Delta. By the way we sold the 22# delta on EBay which covered some of our costs. Marc

Bigger!!

My 356 came with a danforth, and I replaced with a 35# Delta which works well. I keep the danforth as a back up. I use 30 ft of chain with 250 ft of 3/4 rode. The danforth is my back up/stern anchor with 12ft chain and 250' 5/8 rode. Have not had any problems

the 35# is the way to go

We thought the same thing (midget anchor!) and quickly upgraded to the 35# with 150ft of chain (no three strand nylon at all, but with two good snubbers). Holds great. Kept the 22#. Planning on dividing the anchor well and keeping it in the smaller section of the anchor roller while on a trip. We are vigilent, but sleep very soundly with the 35#. Lots of others admire the Bruce - especially those who travel to the Bahamas

Delta 35 #.

I replaced the 22# with a 35 # Delta. Works much better except in pure soft mud, which we have aplenty in the Cheseapeake, for which the Danforth is better but will skate right over grass. Delta is better in sand. We kept the 22 # for use as a stern hook. Ivan Bekey H356 #157 "Victoria"
