Alternator seems to have stopped working. Looks like the field winding is open. I think the alternator is from Amplepower. My question is can anybody rebuild this?

Yes. As long as your stator and rotor are fine everything else is doable. Those units are hand wound and you would not find a "replacement" stator or rotor to match that quality easily. These alts are Delco based so nearly every part, except for the hand wound stator & rotor, are easy to find for any competent rebuilding shop.
Ok my auto electrical guy says the rotor winding has an open. He doesn't seem to think he can fix it. Now what?
