Hey guys, I just bought an alberg 22 and was going to take the little beauty to Hawaii from Victoria B.C., Does anyone know of a boat that small that has done the trip? also if anyone could point me to a website that has "Small boat" stories and advice for cruising i'd be really pleased. Lyn and Larry pardy sometimes visit the Royal Victoria yacht club and have circumnavigated in their 24' sailboat...There can't be much difference in a boat 2' less. This Baby is all i can afford right now and i'd love to plan an adventure with her. Any info would be great.

small boat

Calico Jack, I'm sure that there are a number of small boats that have made the trip that you are considering provided that the boat and the owner were well, and I mean well prepared. You need to research a little more regarding the provisions you are going to need, the water amounts, extra fuel, spare parts etc. The list becomes endless. Remeber that this will all change how the boat performs. I would also start spending time sailing the boat in all type sof weather so you get a better feel of how it will respond in all conditions. good luck Charlie

Please think twice about this . . .

Calico Jack-- Well there have been people that have made it around the world in boats much smaller than 22 feet, (I think the smallest is 16 feet) sailing a boat that small to Hawaii is a very much a safety issue. Charlie brings up some very good points. Being well prepared and bringing the boat up to spec with all the spares need for such a trip is very likely to cost more than the boat you are starting out with. If you are going to do everything needed you are probably a lot better off starting off with a bigger boat. I am sure there are many people that have made the trip in a small boat and I am sure that their are a few that started and did not make it. Unless your sailing skills are right up there at the expert level and your boat is very well prepared I have to think there is a real good chance that things will not go well for you. I am not telling you not to go, hey follow your dream but you should be prepared for the wrost. What ever you deciede to do good luck. --Dan

Preparation - Preparation - Prep...

Good advice from Charlie. I actually think you could do a lot worse than a properly prepared, up-to-date, Alberg 22 for this voyage. Just having a larger boat does not mean success. Indeed, the little full-keel Alberg 22 actually has a great ballast ratio bettering many of the boats from owners here. IT's a solid little boat that could handle conditions. That being said, to be safe and have some peace of mind, you are going to want to gain experience with this boat in various conditions and get the boat completely up to snuff and ready for a voyage of this nature. There are numerous books and sites from people that have attempted this running into all sorts of conditions. You need to do a lot of research, preparation, and ground work to get you and your Alberg 22 ready for such a voyage (and back, presumably). I would say that boat is capable if prepared properly. On the other hand, there is a lot more to take in account and your research & prep journey is just beginning. kh http://beneteau235.com/
